newspaperFor many, our large daily papers have become a chore to sort through and seem to be chock full of filling (meaning we could do without the filling for we’d much prefer a newspaper that’s a “Bottom Liner.” How many times have we looked at this large wad of recycled paper, glimpsed at the headlines and than quickly relegated it to the trash can?

Glimpsing back to the first real newspaper published in the US is more than a little bit fun. Benjamin Harris (editor n’ chief) published a paper in 1690, in Boston, called, “Publick Occurences Both Forreign and Domestick.”

Notice the spelling and think about the sources ole Ben used to keep him current on the “Forreign News.” There weren’t many cables, telephones or TV’s running around in the 1600’s, so visualize old “after the fact” news that people loved, so it wasn’t the accuracy of the news necessarily – it must have been the written presentation that whetted their appetites.

But, we have to thank Ben and all the others who realized there was a need for news – people craved any bits of information that they could get their hands on and sink their teeth into while reading.

These small newspapers concentrated on the economy, politics and often times religious issues without a lot of icing or redundant information for one to sift thru. Now in the 21st century many small newspapers online and in the form of hard copy are available for our reading pleasure and believe you me, we’re loving it!

The online papers are a hit, because via the computer we can pick and choose topics that interest us. They’re a quick read and updated daily, some almost hourly revise their online sites. Could it be that the big newspapers will slowly disappear from the horizon in the future with a new smaller version called the “Small Newspaper?”

In a century that offers all the high technology, news is just a mouse click away. With these new online sites comes a variety never offered before and variety is the spice of life, you know!
