The small newspaper represents a rather new concept that people are studying – it concentrates on what the reader wants and doesn’t slop a bunch of gravy or ridiculous seasoning on top. The reader after all is the one of importance and if what is printed isn’t music to his or hers eyes, than why waste the time creating a monstrosity that few are interested in anyway.
There’s no doubt the small newspaper concept has gained popularity almost hand in hand with the Internet. The larger newspapers depend almost entirely on advertisers are wringing their hands and wondering what will become of them in the future. That’s a valid question and without a doubt something that needs investigating.
For now small newspapers are the answer to our prayers. Whether it’s the small weekly sports reviews, or world updates or the latest in fashion trends or diets they came thru with an innovation that surpasses the “Oldies” (the big papers.) We can have our cake and eat it to, just by jumping online and waving our little mouse around.
If a poll were taken in 2008, it might show the bare-bone statistics about the reading communities that none of the “Big Dogs” want to hear. A high percentage of the people polled would probably respond in this manner; (1) We’re tired of the rolled up oblong piece of re-cycled paper, because frankly it isn’t user friendly, (2) It takes too much time finding the information that interests us and the big papers are in fact verging on boring, let alone exasperating, and (3) Most of us just take the paper out of habit, not because we’re in love with it!
So the small newspaper has received more than it’s share of praise due to it’s simplicity and accuracy in bringing us the news when we want it packaged in a compact little bit of bites via online or small hunks of great information in the hard copies of USA Today or Wall Street Journal.
Britains love the small newspaper and are learning to make the big bucks via the smaller paper – of course they watch the bottom line, but the greatest part of the concept is this, “we the people just love the little papers.”
